VMX file corrupt

$

Hi

I decide to resinstall my PC

I copied all  my data to an external drive and re installed it.

HAving reinstalled windows I copied my files back and installed the latest version of Player.

I use it to run an old accounts package under windows XP.

Now when I start up the virtual drive I see that my VMX file is corrupt.

In the folder I have loads of files with names _000 and  s001 up to s011

I do not want to start doing anything without being sure what I'm doing and it appears my backup is corrupt.

Would appreciate and help. Or if it is dead can I "break into"  thevirtual Drive and extract my accounts

thanks

Ian

vmxnet3 num_rqs on newer kernels

$

Hi,

We're implementing a product, which states in the documentation, that num_rqs should be set to 1. The kernel supplied module 1.4.7.0-k-NAPI says "unknow parameter", when modprobing it with num_rqs.

I tried installing the "legay" vmware tools instead of open-vm-tools, but as far as I can see, kernels since 3.1 includes the vmnet3 driver, and the installer won't build the module on my 4.1.x kernel.

Is num_rqs depcreated - or replaced by another option?

Hello,

I have install the Vmware vSphere ESXI 6.0 free version.

Can you tell me if in this version is possibility to configure the automatic backups of the VM by scheduling a task for that? I'm not finding this feature...

If is not possible in this version, in what version is this possible to configure?

Removing Vmware-Tools from Linux guest

I'm trying to import a Virtual Machine created on VMware Workstation 12 to AWS and the script their rep gave me tells me VMware Tools is installed. I know for sure I did not install it and I can verify the binaries do not exist anywhere on the system.

Taking a close look at the script given by the AWS rep it seems the check is done by doing a,

lsmod | grep vmw

and based on that output lets you know if Vmware Tools is installed or not.

My question is how can I make sure the following modules are not loaded in the first place,

lsmod | grep vmw

vmw_balloon     13415 0

vmw_vmci          67106 0

vmwgfx                1351453    1

For sure vmw_balloon module is not needed but vmwgfx is a dependency for a module named ttm (the '1' indicates a dependency).

Thanks for any responses in advance.

Can anybody suggest any alternate solution?

Installing VM OS from USB?

$

My basic question is "how?"  When I start Workstation 12, the only installation medium it offer me is a CD or DVD drive.  The OS I'm trying to install comes on a USB and won't fit on a DVD.

I'm running Kubuntu 14.04 on a desktop, and I want to install Windows 10.  (Well, it's Windows, and I don't actually want to install it, but my employer uses MS Exchange, and there's no good Linux client for it.  Besides, TurboTax doesn't have a Linux version and doesn't run on Wine.)

Is there a step-by-step somewhere that I have missed?  Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've just upgraded my ESXi from 6.0 to 6.5.

I've used the iso with VMware tools included (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.5.0-4564106.x86_64.iso)

When trying to upgrade the Tools in Virtual Machines I get the following error:

Anyone can help?

Can't install VMWare Tools on FreeBSD 11.0

I've installed FreeBSD 11.0 as a guest in Fusion, but I am unable to install VMWare Tools. The first attempt ended with a message to re-run the program after installing the compat6x-amd64 package.

Installing the compat6x-amd64 package resulted in a message to add COMPAT_FREEBSD6 to my kernel config and a link to instructions on configuring and rebuilding the FreeBSD kernel. It also noted that the package was no longer maintained and was likely to have problems.

I did not want to rebuild my kernel for a package that might be broken, so I simply tried installing VMWare Tools again. This time it failed when the guest memory manager service failed when starting the VMWare Tools Services.

Do I really need to reconfigure and rebuild my kernel to install VMWare Tools? Does the unsupported compat6x-amd64 package work for FreeBSD 11.0? Is there another way to get VMWare Tools installed?

I should add that I suspect FreeBSD 11 is too recent to be supported, but I've found the compatibility guide (VMware Compatibility Guide - System Search) to be absolutely incomprehensible for determining what guest OSes are supported. It looks like some older versions of FreeBSD _might_ be supported, but I just can't tell.

Thanks for any help with this.

I just installed a new ESXI 6.5 server as a learning tool and have several VM already installed

Are  there options missing in the HTML client ?

Getting 4K resolution Fedora 25 in VMWare 12.5.2 build-4638234

Is anyone running Fedora 25 in 4K? I cannot get more than 2560 x 1600, though Fedora 24 had no problem going to 3840 x 2160. The VM is set to use host settings for the monitor, VMWare Tools seems to be installed. Any ideas?

extend C Drive on Windows 2008 R2 running SQL Server 2008/SharePoint 2010

Can I extend C:\ drive in Windows Server 2008 R2 ?  I know how to do this with vCenter to extend the VM for C Drive vmdk and Disk Management/rescan/extend in Windows).

My concern is not how to do it but whether this is a risk as I cannot cause a loss of service or risk to my SQL Server/Sharepoint database.

I've done this on a cluster by extending the inactive SQL Server node, then failing over and extending the other inactive node.  Don't know if that's required to do while inactive only because of cluster, or if no SQL Server DB VMs should have any disks extended while running SQL Server.  Or is this just for data disks and absolutely fine for C Drive?

Points generously awarded for real-world assurances from your experiences.

cheers

Import VM from Fusion to Workstation

This is a simple question, I think, but I can't find anything in the documentation.

I have a Fusion VM of WinXP Pro.  In the near future, I may need to move it to a Windows host.  Does Workstation read and correctly execute Fusion VM files?

I can't do a regular host install as the XP VM has proprietary software on it that 1) won't run on Windows above XP, 2) it's authentication code is CPU-derived, and 3) our IT people don't want XP on our network due to security issues.

Thank you in advance.

Good morning,

i have a problem with a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Server virtual machine on ESX 5.5 Enviroment.

Every about 30 days thisserver brings out the following warnings related to VMware Tools, in this sequence,
every 5 minutes for about 2 hours:

#1 Event 1000 – VMWARE Tools - [ warning] [vmsvc:guestinfo] Failed to get nic info.

#2 Event 1000 – VMWARE Tools - [ warning] [vmsvc:vmsvc] Failed to get size of IP buffer.

#3 Event 2001 – Perdisk – [warning] Unable to read performance data for the Disk performance counters.

...until it becomes inaccessible!!!

It responds to the ping in a discontinuos way (not good)

Vmware tools service doesn’t run

I cannot manage the server

I must force to RESET it from Vsphere to access again .

I already re-installed once the VMware Tools, but the problem persists.

Would you have some suggestions for me about this issue?

Thanks a lot.

Alex

What is the correct size for guest OS virtual memory.

$

I have 4 server VMs where given memory is 256 GB on each VM. The virtual memory is set 4 GB on each VM's guest OS.

I see there is 256GB swap file created in each VM's respective folder. I just want to know, since there is VSWP technique, how virtual memory will come into picture and how much correct size should be set inside guest OS when RAM is 256GB. I am getting frequent logs on server where I have to reboot server everytime to fix memory issue.

Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: QVS.exe (2808) consumed 273415946240 bytes, svchost.exe (220) consumed 154615808 bytes, and mcshield.exe (2900) consumed 146944000 bytes.

Configure big HPC VMs without pinning NUMA node

$

Hi.

I'm trying to configure two or more VMs with 8, 16 or 32 vCPUs on a 4 socket DELL r820 with 64 logical CPUs.

I've configured the first VM with 16 vCPUs with:

cpuid.coresPerSocket = 16

numa.vcpu.preferHT = TRUE

sched.cpu.vsmpConsolidate to TRUE

This makes the VM use one NUMA node and all 8 cores with HT (16 logical CPUs), as the application running in the VM prefers. That said, running only this VM on the host it seems like the ESXi 5.0 hypervisor migrates the VM from node to node. I'm suspecting the NUMA scheduler doing its magic. So I've tried different VM and Host attributes without any luck.

Anyone out there have some experience in this area? Obviously I could set numa.nodeAffinity, but I'm really trying to avoid it! Also disabling the numa scheduler just makes things worse. Any suggestions? My application doesn't use much memory, but it really needs to be local to the current home NUMA node.

Thanks, best regards

Unable to log in to vSphere Client via a particular domain user

I have a few users in the domain group "ESXi Admins". The group is given admin permissions to all ESXi hosts. Two of the three users can log in just fine but one cannot. Only one domain user out of three in the group. If I add that user as a separate user account into the host, he can log in fine, but he cannot being part of the group, even though the other two can.

Hi,

What is the difference between vmtools and vmware hardware version? why do we need to upgrade vmtools first and then upgrade vmware hardware version? .What exactly does vmware hardware version contains and function?

Assume two host has different hardware version (8 and 9) . Will it affect the vm if I migrate from one host to another?

Thanks,

Hi,

Here is my configuration :

- host OS : ESXi 5

- guest OS : Linux Mint 18

- windows server with shared disk

In my Linux Mint 18 I mount a shared disk from the Windows Server with autofs and cifs

My linux user has read/write permission on this disk.

No problem to create files and directories on it.

But if I try to create a symbolic link from a file to another one on this shared disk from my linux I have this error message :

"ln: failed to create symbolic link 'myFile.txt': Operation not supported"

I try with sudo but same message.

How to fix this ?

Thanx

Fabrice
