Use VMWare's own VMware Tools, or native open-vm-tools with CentOS 6.6 and 7.0 guests?

$

Is there any advantage to keeping the native open-vm-tools that come bundled with CentOS 6.6 and 7.0, versus removing them and replacing them with the VMware Tools that can be installed through vCenter?

Guests are running on an ESXi 5.5 U2 host, managed by vCenter 5.5.

How can I get a Mint (Sonya) with VMware Tools installed to automatically resize display?

I have a Linux Mint 18.2 (Sonya) guest installation with VMware Tools installed with reported success, but it is not doing one thing I expected of VMware Tools: resize the display when its window changes, or when it enters fullscreen.

Since I've installed VMware Tools, the one and only way I have found to trigger a change of resolution is to check another option from the dropdown list of screen resolutions under Preferences > Display. (That list does not include my monitor size.)

What, if anything, can I do to get the guest to automaticallly resize

Whether VMware Co will refuse me in the official technical support if on the RHEL/CentOS 6.x guest OS I will have open-vm-tools from EPEL repo?

Hi all!

My the most important question -- is whether VMware Co will refuse me in the official technical support if on the RHEL/CentOS 6.x guest OS I will have open-vm-tools installed from the EPEL repository, rather than native vmware-tools.

Very thanks for the support.

VM Memory usage doesn't match OS Memory Usage

I'm getting alerts from the Windows OS that memory is 90% utilized.  However the "usage %" in vROps and vCenter performance charts never goes above 50%.  There is no memory swapping happening either.   Why is the OS reporting it is out of RAM when vCenter thinks the VM is only using 55%?

VMPlayer can't run VM

Installed recent VMPlayer (14.0.0 build-6661328) on Linux Mint 18.2, and then created new Windows 10 VM with it. Everything went fine, but it didn't show up in the VMPlayer when I started it.

Tried to run it with "open a virtual machine", but once i have browsed the VM it still won't launch. When i enter my systems screen, and start it with command vmplayer <path to Windows10>.vmx, it works absolutely fine. Naturally i can't change any configuration on running VM, and every other relatives refuse to even think about starting anything through screen.

Is that some kind of issue with permissions, or what is going on?

Hi,

We are running Vcenter 6.0 on EXSi 6.0 Host, We are using NetApp to manage the data stores. I have created a datastore volume of 32TB and would like to assign it to one of the VMs, when i go to Vcenter webclient or even to the EXSi host which has the VM to add a Hard disk on that VM through VM settings, it is not letting me create a disk larger than 15.81 TB. can someone please provide some guidance.

Thanks

Can't run VMWare as root

I'm using Vmware Workstation 14 on an Ubuntu 17.10 host. I need to tweak my memory settings in VMware. but when I try, the screen is grayed out and says ...

"You must be running Workstation as root to change these settings."

When I try to run it as root, using either

     $ sudo vmware

or

     $ su -

     Password: <enter password>

     # vmware

I get this error...

"pblanton@GortRover:~$ su -

Runnig VMWare as a regular user (not root) works fine, but I just can't change the memory settings.

Any ideas?

I cannot activate my VMWare Workstation Pro on Linux

I installed from the bundle file (VMware-Workstation-Full-14.0.0-6661328.x86_64.bundle) on Ubuntu 17.10.

When it got to the point where it asked me about the license key, I skipped it, because it said I could do it later.

After the instllation finished, when I ran VMWare for the first time, it asked me for the license key so I entered it, but it gave me the following error...

"Failed to run /usr/lib/vmware/bin/licenseTool 'enter' '5M221-2K300-H8J93-0KAUP-3TD50' '' '' '14.0' 'VMware Workstation' '/usr/lib/vmware' as user root."

I checked the KB and found an article that was just what I was looking for...

VMware Knowledge Base

But when I sudo ran the suggested command, then this error occurred...

"No protocol specified

xcb_connection_has_error() returned true

No protocol specified

xcb_connection_has_error() returned true

** (vmware-enter-serial:766): WARNING **: Could not open X display

No protocol specified

As a punt, I uninstalled the bundle file, and re-ran the installer. This time, I entered the license key when the installer asked me for it. The installation finished without any errors, then prompted me for the license key again when I started it up for the first time. It still fails when I enter it. :-(

VirtualMachine NetworkAdaptor ConnectionState AllowGuestControl - How does it work

$

Hi,

I noticed that there is a setting on a VM's NetworkAdaptor called allowGuestControl. https://code.vmware.com/doc/preview?id=4206#/doc/vim.vm.device.VirtualDeviceOption.ConnectOption.html#allowGuestControl

I found that it should work by using the VMwareToolboxCmd.exe command in VMware Tools according to the manual: https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware-tools-cli.pdf

But when I use the "VMwareToolboxCmd.exe device list" command nothing lists, so I cannot find the connecd for connecting the NIC from within the Guest.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Best Regards

Brian.

I need to run a 32-Bit virtual Machine on a 64-bit Host. Is this Possible?

I need to run a 32-Bit virtual Machine on a 64-bit Host. Is there a VMware virtual machine that does this? (VMware player) I down loaded player 12 but wouldn't run the 32-bit software. Went back and checked what I had down loaded and it was 64 bit machine. So, is it possible for a 32-bit Virtual Machine to run on 64-bit host. The Software is Mitsubishi Electric, Visual Logic Software, Ver 2.60.

VMware Virtual Audio (DevTap) driver and RTAV audio latency/buffer size

$

I am looking for any way to modify the buffer size of the VMware Virtual Audio (DevTap) driver. Our call center is experiencing latency that creates a walkie-talkie effect when conversating. We are using HP t630 thin clients with Horizon Client 4.6 installed. See the VMWare View version and thin client model below.

The conversion taking place specifically between the View environment and the Thin pro (redirecting sound through RTAV) and the VMware Virtual Audio (DevTap) driver is adding 600ms+ Latency to audio.

I have tried different vmx file changes (play.buffersize = “##” pcisound.playbuffer = “##” etc.) but only notice a difference with Analog headsets. Even with the analog headset, it appears I can only make changes that increase the buffer size and add latency. Third party call center software has been eliminated as the cause of the latency and I need to find out an alternative RTAV driver or a way to modify the buffer size of the VMware Virtual Audio drivers. I have attempted setting the devices to High Definition Audio or the ES1371 but have not been able to get sound out of these.

The latency is eliminated using USB passthrough but the quality is choppy and unclear. If someone knows of a way to add buffer to USB passthrough or increase the quality there that would also be an option.

Help is greatly appreciated!

ERROR MSG - NETWORK BRIDGE ON DEVICE VMNET0 IS NOT RUNNING

Hi. I have been using VMPlayer which runs as a guest Linux OS on Windows 10 for quite a while.
I applied some Windows updates a couple of days ago which included the new Creator version. Yesterday
when I started my VMPlayer VM machine  I received the error as noted above as subject. Somehow I think
the Ethernet adapter settings were changed.  I searched the web and found some hits on this which included
step by step instructions on how to install  the service - VMware Bridge Protocol under Settings, Network & Internet,
Ethernet. The steps are straightforward and I'm sure I didn't make a mistake. I then stopped and restarted the
VMware  NAT and DHCP  services. I then rebooted my laptop. I received the same error when I started my VMPlayer VM machine.

I don't have Workstation installed. Basically I'm accessing a Teradata database which runs on a VM guest Linux machine
under VMPlayer.

I'm hoping some VMware users may have seen this issue and may provide me with some advice.. stuck now and
not sure how to proceed with this issue.

I am greatly hoping that I do not have to reinstall VMware since for me that will result in a massive amount of work.

thanks

WINDOWS 10, V1709  - 64 BIT - Dell laptop

VMPlayer - 6.0.7

I've been wrestling with an issue for a couple of days...upgraded Windows 10 to 1709 and lost my eth0 connection... After a few

tries to reestablish the connection, it magically came back after my latest reboot. However, wouldn't you know it... I'm now getting a different msg.
showing up during the startup, in the section SETTING UP (localfs) NETWORK INTERFACES...

it shows up immediately following the eth0 connection being made...
and is as follows  'waiting for mandatory devices - eth1' .
I have no idea what this means since I have never seen it before, but I do know, I am functional once
again since the issue with eth0 apparently has been resolved... However I'd like to resolve this error msg.

Anyone have any ideas ?  Bear in mind I am a network rookie.....  thanks
