Adding 2nd hard drive to VM, getting "media is write protected" when trying to copy files.

I created a virtual machine, moved the vmdk file out of the virtual machine directory on the data store to another location on the datastore, then deleted the virtual machine so the vmdk is not associated with any vm's.  I then add the vmdk as a second drive to an existing vm.  When trying to copy to the drive I get the message that "media is write protected".

I have diskpart and verified the attributes on the disk and volume, READONLY is equal to NO

I would like to copy a WIM file to the second drive so that I can mount the wim and look at the folders via explorer window.  This seems to me that this should be simple.  What am I missing

Should I be able to mount from drive D: (containing WIM file) to drive C: in a mount directory?
