installed Windows 2008 Datacenter Server R2 using vCenter Server 5.5 from iso file on my local network drive.
While the guest was powered on Right clicked on the guest vm then clicked on Guest then click on Install/Upgrade VMware Tools.
Result, the Summary Tab shows VMware Tools as not running.
And the Guest option now shows as End VMware Tools Install
When I go to the Properties/Options tab VMware Tools shows Shutdown.
See attached file
Resolution: I found the problem.
When installing WMware Tools you must
1 - first log into the guest as an Administor (must log in before linking the CD/DVD or this procedure won't work).
2 - insert the software containing the VMware Tools program into the CD/DVD drive on you PC if you haven't already done it
3 - Then get out of the guest and click on the CD/DVD icon , click on CD/DVD drive1, then click on Connect to D:
4 - Right click on the guest, from the list of options click onGuest, then click on Install/Upgrade VMware Tools
5 - The Install VMware Tools box will pop-up, click on OK. Be patient as this may take time to start up
6 - The AutoPlay box will pop-up, for me the WM icon with Run setup64.exe was highlighted, so I double clicked on it
7 - The VMware Tools Setup box will pop-up, click on Next
8 - The next screen will have the Typical circle selected, click on Next
9 - Then next screen will show Ready to install VMware Tools , click on Install
10 - Then next screen will show Completed the VMware Tools Setup Wazard, click on Finished
11 - When the next box appears click on Yes to restart the guest
WMware tools should now be running.
