Redundant Fileserver on vSphere

Hi,

I'm looking for a solution for a redundant fileserver service on vSphere. The environment is mainly Windows and users accessing 24x7. Shared SAN is available. I have the following requirements:

  • The service can be maintained (patched etc.) during operation
  • The data can be backed up with the standard VMware means (API, e.g. VEEAM)

  • HA is not an option as the FS-VM can't be maintained (patched etc) during operation
  • DFS-R proved to be no reliable enough during a pilot installation
  • Microsoft Cluster across Boxes also is not an option as you need either iSCSI within the VMs or RDMs and both can't be backed up with the API (VEEAM). It's also quite complex and hard to maintain.

Any suggestions/ideas?
